The Luminous Community Center (LCC) is a monumental architectural public art installation, a pavilion made of illuminated glass, full of light. The LCC will be an interactive multi-use event space for diverse people to come together. The LCC’s interior and the exterior walls, doors, and ceiling will be layered glass panels, edge-lit by bespoke LED light fixtures encased in metal architectural frames. Its twelve two-sided monumental scale luminous glass paintings will literally glow from within. Mirrored profile portraits are the focal point of the imagery along with layers of organic abstraction. Some portraits face each other, while others look away, and on the four ceiling panels portraits are partially overlaid, one over the other. These symmetrical and asymmetrical, highly abstracted symbolic portraits are gender, race, and age fluid, allowing people to see themselves, while simultaneously seeing a multiplicity of others. It is a portrait of everyone. With the necessary work of healing from our past, our dark, troubling histories, and confronting, reconciling our complicated contemporary political and social realities, the Luminous Community Center will be a unique forum in which to start to manifest building a better future. It will be a new type of social space where we can gather, connect, reflect, communicate, learn, and act. The LCC is designed to be a traveling temporary architectural installation which will move from city to city, venue to venue, museum to museum.
