Simply Improvise is a jazz education project that reimagines how improvisation is taught and experienced. Rooted in the belief that artistic freedom and collaboration thrive when play is prioritized, the project combines the spontaneous ensemble work of improvisational theater with the rigor and vocabulary of jazz music. Through a hybrid curriculum that includes a book, workshop series, and community-based presentations, Simply Improvise introduces musicians to the creative tools traditionally used by actors and comedians at institutions like the Upright Citizens Brigade and Second City.
Rather than centering scale memorization or pattern repetition, the project emphasizes intuitive interaction, risk-taking, and group mind. It provides an accessible, ensemble-driven learning model that encourages musicians to listen, adapt, and create with intention — unlocking musical voices that might otherwise be buried under theoretical overemphasis.
Designed for college and conservatory-level jazz students and the educators who support them, Simply Improvise brings the joy of unscripted play into the practice room, classroom, and performance space. As the project evolves, it will serve as a model for creative pedagogy at the intersection of the arts, education, and positive social change.
