Battlegrounds is a city-wide, augmented reality (AR) public art activation in New Orleans, which interprets the word “battleground” as broadly as possible. The project identifies contested public sites (everything from polluted waterways, to confederate statues, to abortion clinics, to gentrified lands, to levees, to prisons, to neglected neighborhoods, to formerly indigenous territories, etc) and geo-locates thematically related work of local artists in the sites of their choosing. All Battlegrounds artworks will be accessible via an LA-based app, 4th Wall, and there will be multiple community engagement projects to increase access even further. All artworks will be experienced on site via the 4th Wall app, but are invisible to the naked eye. It’s a new type of subversive public art which asks no permission, but attempts to prompt thoughtful discourse around the most urgent issues the artwork and sites represent for the larger community they serve. The app is free and open to the public. This is an unapologetically political project, and does no environmental harm in a region of the country which is most vulnerable to climate change.
